Beloved manager resigns and entire team follows, forcing the store to close down: 'There was literally no one left to work'

When a well-liked member of an organization walks, upper management had better prepare themselves for repercussions.

This store manager was a beloved member of the team and was well-known for being the sole reason why this specific branch did not have the high turnover rate that other branches certainly had. It was as if this manager were a surrogate parent for several employees at this store. Obviously, that could present itself with its own challenges, but we believe the author's account of this anecdote, when she explained that this manager's behavior managed to be both professional and familial.

However, the real problem began when the corporate team started trying to enforce new policies that the beloved manager was uncomfortable asking of her employees. She tried to push back with these unrealistic expectations and policy changes. Unfortunately, all her efforts were met with resistance. Eventually, it got to the point where the manager had to make a tough decision: choose between her own job security and the fair working conditions of her employees. 

She ended up making the ethical decision, and it backfired majorly for that branch of the store.

  • Once the manager announced her departure, it became clear to her employees that she made this decision to protect them. Within the next day, the vast majority of the manager's former employees submitted their resignation letters as well. 

    The author explained that she wanted to do the same but was hesitant because of her financial predicament. After all, not everyone can afford to just quit on the spot. Still, she felt like as soon as she was able to do so, she would follow suit and resign. 

    The manager reached out to the author and provided her with support, pledging to help her get hired somewhere else if she felt comfortable taking the risk and quitting. That ended up being the push the author needed to take the plunge.

    After her resignation, there was literally no one else left to pick up shifts. Additionally, corporate was going to have a lot of trouble finding folks who were willing to accept these poor working conditions… especially without a good manager who would have their backs.
